Historic City House - The Netherlands

A unique project with character and style in an amazing location! An old townhouse that resides in the historic center of Haarlem that dates back to 1650. The house has been completely renovated by STUDIOTOFF by respecting the original architecture while embracing the essence of STUDIOTOFF design’s style and vision. The result is a sophisticated and inviting space that harmoniously belongs to this historic location.

To preserve the authentic charm of the house, the original well maintained brick façade and were retained. The seamless transition from the exterior to the interior is accomplished through the use of a traditional ‘Dutch Waaltjes ‘brick floor in the entrance hall. Moreover, the living area’s entrance features a beautifully crafted wooden door, adorned with small panes of float-glass, impeccably matching the original window design.

The house’s charm is thoughtfully reflected in the layout, colours, and materials chosen for the interior. The ground floor boasts an open floor plan that flawlessly merges the living and dining area with the kitchen. Abundant natural light floods the space, creating a warm and inviting sitting nook, while the opposite corner is thoughtfully designated for the dining area. A dark, untreated wooden table takes centre stage, complemented by a contemporary portrait photo by Miguel Vallinas, inspired by traditional Flemish painting. However, the true eye catcher of this open living space is the kitchen, featuring a sleek design with flawless tiles adorning the entire wall. Completing the ensemble are stylish grey Hay stools and a Studio Job cabinet providing additional storage.

The charm of the house has also been taken into account in the choice of layout, colors, and materials inside. The open floor plan on the ground floor combines the living and dining area and kitchen. The large windows provide bountiful light that is perfect for a cozy sitting nook, while the corner opposite is ideal for the dining area. Behind the dark, unprocessed wooden table, from brand Wood, is a portrait photo of Miguel Vallinas, who approaches the traditional Flemish painting in a contemporary way. The real eye-catcher of this open living space is the kitchen with a straight layout and impeccable tiles that cover the entire wall. Combined with grey Hay stool and Studio Job cabinet for extra storage.

The ceiling beams on the ground floor have been replaced with reclaimed wood sourced from old Amsterdam canal houses, ensuring a perfect match with the house’s original period. Complementing this charming touch, the high white walls, adorned with black light fixtures, further enhance the elegant ambiance of the space.

The distinctive white angle staircase introduces a captivating diagonal interplay of heights and depths. Upon reaching the first floor, one is immediately drawn to the wooden floor and the original historic beamed ceiling, exuding a sense of timeless charm. This floor houses the first bedroom, featuring an ensuite bathroom and toilet. The minimalistic design of the bright, spacious bedroom is adorned with a captivating string lamp by Christien Meinderstma and a sleek black mirror from Menu. The ensuite bathroom showcases a delightful mix of textures, combining Winckelmans hexagon floor tiling with elegant marble wall and shower tiles. Black fixtures and a white sink with a pink mirror complete the space. The second floor maintains the same style as the first bedroom, boasting another striking ensuite bathroom. With a beautiful ceiling-roof construction, double skylight, and dormer window, this floor becomes a fully-fledged living area flooded with natural light.
